Dr. Grandin has received enormous accolades for her best-selling book Animals in Translation: Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal Behavior, but, more often than not, it’s because she "has transformed autism from being an unfortunate disability to being an enviable advantage that many of us would give anything to experience." She and her co-author Sean Barron carry this mantle one gargantuan step further with Unwritten Rules. They give us insight into our own world like no one else has.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS:
not just for the autistic and their family, everyone should read this book -

While verbose with too many restatements, this book did indeed provide unique perspectives. A lot of that perspective was personal testimony by the authors who have autism. Since the symptoms of autism vary in kind and intensity on a wide spectrum, even normal people (called neurotypicals in the book) may display some symptoms. I saw some of myself and some people I know as I read the details. Some instances could be bad education instead of neuronal short circuits. Read this book to understand autism and also good social behavior.

Very disappointing -

slightly interesting book, but I bought it hoping to learn some basic social rules. Very few specific rules are given, and instead, lots of information on authors' early lives. Some information on how to interact with aspie children, which is fine, but this was not at all evident from the title or cover.
pretty interesting so far -

From what I've read so far, it's been better than expected. The title makes it sound really dull and boring, but if you know someone with ASD or autism, than you will eat it up. I look forward to getting through the whole book. Very interesting.
Useful Insights; Important Perspectives; Better Editing Needed -

This book The Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships: Decoding Social Mysteries Through the Unique Perspectives of Autism owes much of its valuable lessons to Dr. Temple Grandin. Sean Barron provides contrasting perspectives, and the reader is then able to see what approaches lead to particular results.
Grandin relates her way of functioning to that of a computer in that she sorts through memories as a visual learner. She then uses logic to decide what action to take. Throughout the book she mentions over and over of her mother's influence and consistent discipline. Temple also points out that the nature of today's society makes it increasingly difficult for ASD individuals and states numerous times that she is a fortunate product of a time when life was much more structured and people were more straightforward.
Barron has a different approach, and the reader is able to see the disadvantages and learn from his misunderstandings of life. It is necessary that his story be told so that a non-ASD can relate.
The book is more than unwritten rules. Dr. Temple's introduction to her history brings perspective to the reality that we live in: life is more chaotic today than it was during her time growing up. Her explanation makes sense and serves as a basis for a basic understanding of the mindset of those living with ASD. After this is established the rules come. Ten major rules are listed with plenty more given in italic print scattered throughout afterward.
Temple and Barron bought had heavy influence and intervention. Their parents were aware of their diagnoses and worked to rise above them. At no time did they given in to the doctor's prognosis that their future would be bleak. This is significant. Through their upbringings, one can see that it takes consistent effort. Parents must educate themselves and not succumb to the challenges their children face. This takes time and daily energy.
I give the book only four stars due to very sloppy editing. There are actually spelling errors as well. It does not detract from the purpose of the book, but it is at least distracting.
I recommend reading this book cover to cover. I felt the story-telling became mundane, but I found it necessary to gain perspective. The major rules are given more weight, but be sure to take note of the minor ones. Plenty of examples help give them context and bring clarity to their meaning. Finally, remember that times have changed and that each individual has a potential that is realistic particularly in his or her life. The goal is to improve functioning by bringing understanding day by day every day.

A book for everyone -

I bought this book because I hoped that it would help me understand a family member better. But it helped me to understand myself! What a lovely surprise. I think that the authors' review of human nature and their strategies and rules for success in human interaction are excellent for the general reader as well as for the person trying to understand autism or the autistic person trying to negotiate the world of neurotypicals. The book is full of enthusiasm, earnestness, and just plain good advice --- all of it communicated directly and in good prose.
