GREAT Book to Have in my Crochet Basket! -

I'm an intermediate crocheter who's always trying to look outside the granny square. While I love the traditional granny blanket, I like to find ideas and color choices that are a little more challenging. This book has proved to be a FANTASTIC tool!
I believe there's something in here for everyone. Beginners, intermediates, and even the advanced crocheter (there's a few patterns in here that I just love, but they're a little beyond my abilities at this point). I will be carrying this book around with me for a very long time. There's a very wide variety of different, yet easy patterns for quick, no-brainer projects, and there's much fancier blocks for more intricate designs.
I just can't recommend this book enough! I don't think any crocheter should be without it. I've completed MANY blocks from this book, and I haven't run into any of the mistakes some of the other reviewers speak of. I'm not saying they don't exist, but I myself have had no issues. If you're even slightly interested in this book, I say go for it...you won't regret it!

Great for an 'advanced beginner' -

I had just started out crocheting when I bought this book. Until then, I had only made a simple afghan that was really one big granny square, completed in the round. I wanted to make more traditional afghans from smaller squares and was looking for a set of patterns.
I am very, very happy with '200 Crochet Blocks'. It's just what I was looking for: several patterns (yes, some variations of a single one, but a variation does mean that it varies and so there is a difference), *great* instructions on how to use color, how to assemble, tips on where to find inspiration, and a very useful set of instructions at the end on basic stitches and nice edgings to finish off the work. I'm so glad I chose this book: it's beautifully put together, easy to look through (the directory system makes it easy to jump from one pattern to the other) and I just can't say enough on how it teaches you to use color schemes! I can't wait to get started.
As for experience level, I guess it depends on how comfortable you feel crocheting. After finishing my first project, I'm quite at ease with my needle and feel confident on taking on more difficult projects (the book has a difficulty-grading system for each project, as well as the 'direction' of the pattern). Some people learn visually, and it did help to first watch videos online of someone assembling a granny square. Once I 'got it', it became a lot easier to follow written instructions. Now that I am able to do so, I plan on keeping a lookout for other books by this author.
Spiffed up Granny Squares -

This book has a lot of patterns for spiffed up granny squares. Have to have more knowledge than just a beginner for a few patterns. Most of the patterns are easy to understand.
NOT 200 SQUARES -

As many reviewers have already stated, there are NOT 200 different block designs. The author does indeed recycle patterns, displaying them in different colours and qualifying them as additional patterns. This is disappointing. The title is MISLEADING, even if the contents are wonderful.

Great little book of crochet blocks! -

I bought this book simply because I like the color combination on the cover, but once I opened the book I was thrilled with what's inside! People have commented that there are "only" 128 or so patterns in the book--who cares? That's plenty to keep me occupied for a l-o-n-g time. I also saw a comment that the pictures were muddy. This suprised me because the color combinations in my book really pop. I also saw several comments about corrections on the Interweave Press webiste, and I'm glad I read those so I could download them.
I consider myself an advanced beginner, and I've been able to make 2-hook designs with very little struggle.
My biggest complaint about the book is that it says all of the blocks are 6" big, and I have yet to make a block that size without eliminating rounds (despite using the smallest hook I have). BUT... this is totally my fault. I'm a new, self-taught crocheter, and I still don't understand yarn weights. For example, I didn't know--until I read another review--that DK weight yarn is thinner than "regular" acrylic yarn which is what I'm using.
Also (this is silly, but...), I own several Interweave Press crochet books, and I like that they're all the same 10" square size. They all "match" on my bookshelf!
Overall, I'm ticked to death with this book and even started a crochetalong based on this book (it can be found on the Craftster [dot] org website if anyone is interested in joining along!).
