Worth every second spent reading... - 
This book isn't what I was after. It's not a "Dummies Guide" to sharpening planes by any stretch of the imagination. However, spend just a little while reading through the book and you will develop a better understanding of the types of planes that are available to do the job you need. Not only that, but it will show you how to set your plane up properly to do the job you want and show you the best way of sharpening the blade. The photos throughout the book are of high quality, both colour and B&W, making this a book that is both useful and beautiful. I have a better understanding and appreciation for this tool as a result of reading this book and am happier and more confident using handplanes.

I'm a relatively new woodworker and entirely new to hand planes. This book, along with Chris Schwarz's Handplane Essentials, are, to me, "essentials" for understanding how to select, set up and use hand planes. Following Hack's guidance, i've set up a couple of my planes and started working with a piece of curly red oak that's too big for my power planer. While I haven't got it perfect yet, I will, thanks to Hack and Schwarz. In addition, it's a fun read if you are into woodworking!

This is the definitive answer to all your questions about hand planes. The history of practically all hand planes, their uses and maintenance. If you are interested in building your own wood plane for a special project, look no further because it is covered here. The book is rich with both photos and diagrams of all aspects of the plane. It's one of the best reference books to grace the shelves of my library. Because of this book I was able to take some old inherited Stanley planes that had been poorly cared for and turned them into extremely accurate, pleasurable working tools. This book is a real bargain, too!

I have been working to improve my hand tool ability and bought this book in an attempt to assist in that effort. This is an exhaustive review of the evolution of plane design and utilization. I highly recommend it.

Author Garrett Hack and publisher Taunton Press have created a MAGNIFICENT BOOK.
From the standpoint of the physical book it is excellent in paperback form, being printed on 70 lb. paper with covers twice as heavy as the pages. From the standpoint of a book it has all the formally required parts. From the two cover pages, dedication, acknowledgments and table of contents, through the 13 chapters, we then find a good bibliography, an excellent index of 740+ entries, credits and through all the way to the colophon, it is a quite proper book.
The contents are supplemented by 356 color drawings and wonderful photographs in the 264 pages.
These make it an even more proper book.
The infomation is thorough and deep yet also easily readable.
