Glenn Beck is smarter than he looks. -
I read a fair amount of political stuff from "both sides of the aisle" and usually dismiss 99% of it by default I've seen Beck's TV show on Fox a few times and, honestly, I've always had a soft spot for an imp with an evil grin. (That's the great part about TV, characters can be any size you want to imagine.) I heard what he said but I hear a lot of things on TV.

I didn't expect much out of this book (except a place to lose myself a few hours.) so it was quite a shock to see how well developed, researched, documented and logical it was. A bunch of academic types can do that but Beck did it and remained entertaining. That's a good trick!!!

I expected "Global Warming" to be the dominant issue so I was curious as to which direction he would head. How could I have guessed he would stoop to using broad credible research, unbiased analysis and logical thought processes to come to his conclusion. I had previously formed my own opinion using a very similar process. A writer gains credibility rapidly when they draw from sources intimately familiar to the reader and Glenn Beck gained a big chunk here... a very big chunk.

I think reading this book with an open (but skeptical. Actually check the sources and references) mind would help people understand some of today's issues much more clearly.
And you will giggle a lot while reading it.

Absolutely great...and FUNNY book! -
I had always seen Glenn pushing this book; however, I really didn't care to buy something with a title such as "An Inconvenient Book"...which is obviously a take on the whole Al Gore "Inconvenient Truth". I thought the book was just about debunking Al Gore's madness about global warming.

But...I ran across this book at Walmart the other day and decided to have a look. I chose a page at random and started reading...hmmm...very interesting. I would keep opening the book randomly and finding that at every instance, there was some topic that Glenn would write about that would keep me reading. The book is broken down so that Glennn only stays on a particular topic for a page or two and moves on...and this book is FUNNY! Glenn spices up the book with creative little jokes and side comments that are just absolutely hilarious! If you enjoy Glenn's show on FOX, you will LOVE this book.

The book is paperback; however, it is quite a good size and has heavy weight bright white glossy paper with lots of illustrations and photos on every page. My 13 year old daughter picked it up the other day and read it cover to cover in 3 days. I could not get her to put it down. So the bottom line is that this is a GREAT book...it's not left wing...not right wing...it's for Americans and everyone that loves freedom and liberty. Thank you Glenn...you brightened up my day :)

Educational and entertaining -
Worth every dime. You'll notice the naysayers haven't even read the book. It's very very good~

A breeze of a read with 3 stars of entertainment value, but only 2 overall -
Hello, just a few things to start so as to where I am coming from; first being I'm not a Republican, and two I'm Liberal but wouldn't say I'm a Democrat, and last I don't watch Beck, mostly as I'm not sure when he is on, and the few clips I have seen of him I was not rather impressed. To be honest, I bought the book as I like hearing both sides of an argument, and his seems like a 'Republican Populist' stance. Although I do feel somewhat disappointed in turning over money to add to his wallet.

All that out of the way....the book was an easy enough read. I disagree with a lot of his 'solutions', but he did offer many fresh takes on all the many, many topics covered. His style was intensely personal explanations of each of these forums, peppered with anecdote and sidebar facts and viewpoints.

First though, the overall mood was one of entertainment value. Beck is an entertainer; as such his 'ideas' are undeveloped appeals towards simplified 'solutions.' He gyrates between siding with certain politicians, and ideologues versus condemning 'government', 'big business' and interest groups. To me it was this 'flip-flopping' of support that chipped away at his overall effectiveness of convincing me of the plausibility of his simple 'solutions'. For one, government and big business, etc are all run by PEOPLE. They are not some abstract boogey-men, orchestrating the reigns of power and society. The glorification of the American 'people' as being able to effect change is a naive approach to things, as society is made up of millions of individuals. Acting in concert, these individuals form groups, etc.- the most potent being of course government, big business etc. This attempt to galvanize the 'people' and see the simplicity of the solutions is mired in this us-versus-them mentality that permeates his book.

All that aside though, he is of course, just an entertainer. His ideas carry no more merit and are lacking in the nuances of the actual issues than the 'average joe'. So this book was simply an expiation of ideas from a single man. But as to the ideas, just a few points I would like to make about a few of the topics he covers.

Global warming is a valid area of opposing viewpoints that I appreciated his interpretation of the facts, and the solar flares and other causes are small, but justifiable concerns within the scientific community.

His economic chapters, on income, and minimum wage, tipping, and poverty are valid capitalist arguments, but he poisons his own well with the fact that his solutions are little more than self-appeasements. It seems odd that a book published during the current fiscal crisis in America would not even delve or mention the perils of capitalism, glossing over it instead with 'look out for number 1 only'ness.

His 'education' chapter is little more than 'bashing' of the entire secondary educational system of America. This is probably the chapter I found the hardest to get through, as it seemed that all the innovation and ingenuity and lively debate that Beck espoused throughout the book, so much of which goes on in America's higher learning institutions, is somehow universally demonized as inherently 'liberal'. Attacking, or rather, challenging, specific 'liberals' in universities, etc would have been more palpable to me, but his 'to heck with them all' attitude just defied me completely- education, especially university level education, which is comprised of people who are studying difficult and actual solutions, is and has been one of the breeding grounds for American growth and prosperity. 'Liberal' thinking, while extreme in some instances yes, is also needed to form new ideas and inventions.

A few of his topics include 'conspiracy-theorist' like agendas behind them, such as the illegal immigration, the energy crisis etc. They did however offer some good points as to the machinations of larger trends at work, however, again, these effects are being made by people, not by disembodied entities acting outside the bounds of human sentiment.

There were many topics simply included for laughs and to lessen the 'heavier' ideas in the preceding or following passages, and these were entertaining but again, reflected more his own personal sentiments.

Overall the book was entertaining enough. It offered his, and again he is an entertainer, and his alone perspective on things. The biggest gripes I had with the book were its complete lack of sources. Throughout the chapters he quotes and quotes and quotes. Sometimes from people he agrees with sometimes with people he doesn't sometimes with statistics, etc. Taken from the vantage of simply an opinion book, this would not have been so bad, however his writing is clearly meant to engage the sentiments of the reader. Without sources, the credibility of these references were called into question, and served to weaken greatly the effectiveness of his positions. Worse still, he devoted an entire chapter towards debunking polling, and mentioned many times of the ineffectiveness of statistical reasoning's. For instance, his quoting of various studies against global warming just served to reinforce the feeling of uncertainty of the believability of his position against it. He seemed to toe the line between accepting facts, figures and indeed scientific persuasions, and using scientific measurements as background to his own arguments; a clear confusion of his own beliefs. Also, the more in-depth topics he covered, ones where he sited all manner of these references, or the research 'he' did into the various agendas, the less likely I believed that he had a firm grasp on the ideas he was putting forth. It to me seemed that he had an 'opinion' and then had his research team or writer(s) find evidence to corroborate that theory. Which again downplayed the effectiveness of his message. At last, just as an aside, to get a little politically correct- I did not understand at all the A.D.D moment blurbs throughout the book. I like side panels, however, was his intention to glamorous and glorify an actually debilitating condition that does affect people? Granted it may be over-diagnosed but I have seen people with severe A.D.D and I found this a bit...politically incorrect.

Overall, it was an entertaining book, with good points, convoluted ideas(sometimes the 'solutions' he presented had little to no relation to the topic of the chapter themselves), some 'shock' value and a message- although that message must have been lost due to his A.D.D.

Glenn Beck Hits it Out of the Park -
Okay first things first: I thought it was a very well researched, intuitive book. It gives some very good solutions to problems we are facing. Even if you don't agree with his views all the time, read this book for the humor. The one bad thing about this book is that there are a few strange chapters like: "Sleepytime! The Weekend Movie Rental" and "Aging: God's System of Depreciation"
