good for beginners - 
I've been exploring acrylic paint more than in the past for its uses in mixed media collage and really like the versatility of it as well as all the possibilities of mediums which can be added to it for various effects. However, I like "Rethinking Acrylic" by Patti Brady quite a bit better than "The New Acrylics" because it includes many more techniques. However, Brady's book assumes that you have some painting background whereas "The New Acrylics" is more for the beginner. So, I think both books are useful, depending on what your needs are and your level of expertise.
A little bit different from what I expected -
This book illustrates the difference between physical bookstores, and online ones.
I was looking for a book that tells me how I can better utilize acrylics in my own novice paintings, and how I can improve the painting process. If I had come across this book in a regular store, and paged through it, I would have realized this is not such a book. I might have bought it anyway, but for different reasons.
The book is beautiful and inspiring. Full of high-quality photographs of the acrylic medium, and just paging through it inspires one to try something new.
I hadn't realized the brisk technical advance of the medium, and all the different ways of using it. In addition to being used by professional artists for serious work, the acrylics are an ideal medium for all kinds of arts and crafts.
This really is a new generation of material.
So, I can recommend the book without hesitation. I see myself as a budding painter, in the classical way. But the book leaves me with an itch to go out to my painting area and try something new. Glue something. Scrape something....

The new acrylic-"the cliff's notes to everything acrylic" -
Being a former h.s. art teacher and a full time professional artist, I am critical of books. Most pad their pages to get a bigger price, wordy, with poor art as examples....my biggest peeve. This is just the opposite...easy to read with in depth details in every area of acrylic...not a beginners "talk down" book but rather clear, concise verbage to professionals or beginners alike. Photos are wonderful and plentiful and you can use just like the old "cliff notes" tiny books on novels...this is the no nonsense, packed with power book for all. I have already suggested it to many.

As a beginner painter of acrylic medium, I needed a solid book of reference to enhance my classroom painting. I was lucky enough to land myself in a class with a professor who shares the same philosophy of art that I do; he started us off with still-life compositions, limited pallatte and optical illusion excersises, but then he released us into our own creative directions - once we had the basics down. He also encouraged us to go out and "see" art; as it is not the same to merely glance at art on the Internet. Seeing an actual art piece at a museum or art gallery is akin to inspriation because one "see"s the paint strokes that create the image on canvas, or wood or brass. It is interesting to learn that all sorts of paints can be used to create all sorts of imagery. Seeing watercolours, oils as well as acrylics works is vital to grasping greater knowledge about one's abilities to put paint on canvas. Our little world of acrylics is the best, in my humble opinion, because the paints are so stable, dry fast, and can be repainted over and over if the artist wishes to do so.
What is also interesting is the tools that one can utilize to "paint" such as brushes, which are the most predictable and basic types of tools - but also one can be challenged to paint with palette knives, foam daubers, airbrush apparati, rollers and other graining tools, such as chunks of wood. One can boost creative expression by attempting to paint by fork, knife or spoon. Improvising is also daunting; on page 42 the idea of putting acrylic paint inside of a pastry bag and pushing it through a standard frosting tube is introduced and - yes - I will try this technique in the new year! What fun that will be!
Painting is fun; it is a farther extension of who I am as a person who cares about beauty in this world and I also care about my fellow man.
Painting is all about color - painting is all about the paint, because paint is emotion. Painting is symbolism and metaphor, and it takes patience and a long time to bring emotion to the eye of the beholder.
I love this book and plan on re-reading it tonight!
