Not shallow, but not deep - 
I bought the audio edition. Only[...] Well worth the money. Enjoyable. But I was left feeling that it could have been a lot longer, and a long deeper. The book was not shallow. But it was not deep either. About the level of NPR. Middlebrow. But for [...] ... we shouldnt expect more.

a fascinating exploration of human cultures -
This book starts with an interesting premise - that people in certain countries are happier than others. The author goes on a yearlong search to explore these places and see if he can find out why. Throughout the book, he seems to struggle with the concept of happiness and seems ambivalent about it all, but then, he is a self-proclaimed "grump." His sarcasm can be funny, but sometimes it feels forced and disrupts the flow of the book. Still, he gathers fascinating insights into the national psyches of other countries, as well as some great interviews with people who move from one country to the next to find happiness. The contrasting views about what's important between people in other countries and those in the United States is really illuminating. There are a lot of good lessons to be learned here. These cultural explorations are the best thing about this book. He raises a lot of great questions as he wonders what will make people, including himself, really happy. He teeters on some real answers but then rambles on to something else. The answers are in this book, but read it slowly or you'll miss them.

Weiner writes about his efforts to discover and experience the elusive concept of "happpiness" by his "research" visits to several countries whose scores differ widely on the World Happiness Database. He not only enlightens and educates us about the idea of happiness, but he stimulates bliss and much laughter along our travels with his wit and self-effacing humor.

No matter where you go this year, throw this book in for the trip! Although I'll probably never go to Qatar or Moldova, I enjoyed the journey vicariously. Seeing the world's 'happiest' places through the prism of a trained eye enhanced my own vacations this year to places that didn't make the list but had their own wisdom to impart. Weiner had me looking for it...

What an awesome book. It is original, funny, incredibly accurate and inspiring. I spent 10 days in Thailand and I was amazed at how well Mr. Weiner captured the Thai people. I'm ready for my next adventure!
