Good guy Gabriel -

Artist/not-so-secret agent Gabriel Allon is lured from his idyllic Umbria honeymoon by a request for a "small favor" from his mentor/father surrogate, former head of the Mussad. The favor turns out to be lethal. Although the mission that develops is a crucial one, involving covert arms sales and global terrorism, Gabriel has learned to subjugate what his heart tells him in order to do what he deems right. Somehow, Moscow Rules is missing the edge that all previous Allon novels have offered. While there is menace and violence to spare, Gabriel himself seems to be going through the paces because, well, that's what he does. The villain of the piece, Ivan Kharkov, seems a caricature designed to personify all the tyrannical elements that persist even in modern Russia, and his wife, who rats him out, doesn't come across as strong or committed enough to fulfill her mission. Nevertheless, I'd rather read a Silva covert-ops novel than one by virtually anyone else writing today, and Moscow isn't bad, simply not quite as sharp as its predecessors.

Moscow Rules is fast-paced and thrilling -

Daniel Silva continues to show why the crown of the suspense thriller is not an easy one to dislodge from his head. Once again we're enthralled by the guile of Gabriel Allon, art restorer extraordinare. Our favorite secret agent is informed by undercover intelligence that a Russian smuggler is secretly selling weapons to an advanced terrorist group. And you thought this honeymoon was to be different the second time around? Naughty, naughty. Well, our leading man decides to investigate this and find out when exactly this attack is set to be launched. But if no one knows much more than who's buying and selling how are we to discover the plan of attack? Enter Elena, who not only spills the beans on the weapon's sales, but on the real reason for it. As with all Daniel Silva's novel, Moscow Rules is fast-paced and thrilling, intriguing and insatiable. Another great book I'd recommend is-SIRENS by GEO TIN: Sirens (Mass Market) I gobbled it down in 2 days...I couldn't stop reading...always a sign of a great book.
Nervous suspense, in spades -

Of all the thrillers that I have read, including ten by Daniel Silva, this is the only one where the action got so suspenseful that I actually laid down the book from my nervous hands. This was in the middle of a scene that was painted so vivid that I was concerned about Gabriel surviving the harsh torture; would he ever see again. While I was taking my thirty minute break, I wondered how he would get out of this and if he could save the woman that he was trying to rescue. He had been ordered to abandon any further attempt. Hell, their plane out of Russia had already taken off without them with all the other members of the rescue detail.
It all began when Gabriel was in an isolated farm in the hills of Umbria, France, restoring a painting, while on his honeymoon - a Russia journalist is mysteriously stabbed in the chest while on holiday in Courchrvel, France - Gabriel is summoned back into service for a quick afternoon trip to meet the editor in chief of the Russia Gazeta to obtain an important message regarding a grave threat to the security of the West; the editor insisted that he would only meet with Gabriel - after a surveillance detection run the editor dropped dead in sight of Gabriel and his watchers in St. Peter's Square - and then Gabriel had to establish contact with someone else in the extremely nervous staff of the Gazeta to . . .
Highly recommended.

Very good, but not as good as Silva usually is -

It is good, but looks like he wrote it, specially the last third, under pressure of time. I have read all his books, but this one is maybe not even in the top half of them, which makes it also good, but we expect from Silva superb, good is for others.
