A real page -turner... -
I enjoyed this book. I thought it was intriguing and a great read. I recommend it.

It takes over 300 pages for the first real clue into the murder -
Which for me, is a little too long, how about two hundred pages too long. The investigation into the murder, which is the primary plot line, does not really start until well after 300 pages into the boook. These are some intersting things that happen before that point, but for a murder mystery to take that long for the first real clue to come along, is, in my humble opinion, too long.

The main character seems not too interested to dointg any investigating. And so he does not really do any. He does other stuff, like bed women, and eat, and walk, and go to jail, and talk a lot, but he does very little investigating. The longer I got into the book, the more I wondered when any kind of progress would be made in the investigation, and what realy was the point of the 300 page prolouge.

There is a good second lead character, in fact, the book would be much better with just her doing the investigation. As an editor, I would have dumped the boring, meandering, main character, and just developed the main story around the female investigator. Her parts are interesting. His are not so much.

There is also a second plot line involving corporate bad guys. I would have trimmed most of this out too, it adds little, and drags down the main plot line. And is what much of the not so riveting first 300 pages are about.

The book is interesting overall, and very good in parts, and for the most part I enjoyed reading it. But it is also tedious in parts too.

At times the english translation is poor, which for a major book publisher, is quite surprisng.

I recommend it, but with only thee stars

"I want you to find out who in the family murdered Harriet,... -
...and who since then has spent almost forty years trying to drive me insane." If this phrase does not capture your interest and imagination, then I guess this may not be the book for you. However, I believe most people will be eager to know more about this fascinating story. An old and powerful man tormented by his past that comes back every year to haunt him on his birthday in the manner of a flower delivered by post, a journalist that fights against corruption in an uphill battle, and one of the most fascinating female characters I have ever encountered are at the center of this plot.

The author weaves together one of the most compelling mystery plots I have read in a while, and if that wasn't enough, he blends in the portraits of wonderful characters, and brings to the forefront the topic of abuse and prejudice in Sweden. The fact that he could bring together all these elements without the story becoming slow or boring at any point is commendable, and, on the contrary, this novel reads like a fast-paced thriller.

The complex relationships among characters, and the multitude of suspects / participants in the main plot and subplots are one of the factors that make this a great book. Among these characters, we find Lisbeth Salander, who is the girl with the dragon tattoo, and who in my opinion is one of the greatest characters in literature, on par with the likes of Rodion Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment or Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. Salander is a young woman of fragile complexion, who has been assigned a guardian by the state due to her inability to take care of herself as a consequence of a diminished mental capacity. However, we soon realize that this is far from the truth, since she is way smarter than people think, and an excellent investigator and hacker. Her asocial characteristics clash with her desire to have people show interest in her. Having this character as central in the novel takes this work from the very good read to the outstanding level!

There is only one reason in my mind not to read this book; if you are extremely bothered by violence against women, then you may want to stay away. The descriptions are fairly graphic, and they may turn some people off. If that is not your case, then I recommend this novel without any reservations, you are in for a real treat.

Fascinating -
The Girl with ... is well-written. The two story lines are nicely separated, although I found the financial line a bit confusing. Some scenes in the book describe disturbing sexual images. The "murder mystery" is particularly fascinating. The book provides an opportunity to learn some about the Swedish people and the geography of the country.

enraptured but -
Fantastic characters, terrific plot, but the writing was choppy. Both the protagonist and his sidekick, the woman of the title, were extremely interesting characters, and I found myself needing to know the answer to the mystery (ies). I suppose that is the point of a mystery novel, so job well done.

However, this book was recommended to me without qualification, and that does not make sense to me. In addition to some short, awkward and simplistic constructions, the misuse of the word "parody" is glaring. If parody has some obscure meaning that no one has used in 100 years, whatever. A parody should be somewhat humorous, or satiric, and this use does not make the cut.

Also, without spoiling, I will say the explanation of the flower does not make sense either. And if another protagonist of a thriller is a writer, I will scream out loud. It's a page turner, but with some flaws.
